Monsters (Netflix). We hate to break this news, but America’s back catalog of sensational crimes is fully picked over. Can we be revisiting the parent-murdering escapades of CourtTV alumni Erik and Lyle Menendez yet again? Spoiler alert: they did it, they admit it, and it’s all Daddy’s fault! Ryan Murphy & Co. return to the scene of the crime, with Chloë Sevigny and Javier Bardem camping it up as José and Kitty M., still a defense attorney’s dream. Kitty hates her miserable brats, declaring I coulda been Kim Novak! Meanwhile, José is El Diablo. The boys (Cooper Koch and Nicholas Chavez) commit the capital offense by lip-syncing to Milli Vanilli. So many monsters! It’s easy to forget they are based on actual human beings. — Babette Van Degen

The Penguin (HBO/Max). Not so much another Gotham City brand extension as a gangster movie, Wag Lauren LeFranc’s supervillain origin story turns Colin Farrell (under many pounds of makeup) into James Gandolfini as the title character, a small-time hood who claws his way to the top of the underworld. Cristin Milioti is his rival, the daughter of a crimelord, he used to chauffeur. But the real evildoer here is the Pengui’s mother (Deirdre O’Connell), who gives Livia Soprano a run for her money when it comes to warping her offspring.—Finn DeTrolio
